Take a look

The former Mountain Monastery (or Barraconvent) on the Kloosterlaan, founded in the 14th century by the Canons Regular and dedicated to "Saint Nicholas". It was a monastery with rich possessions and was inhabited by numerous monks, who not only kept to spiritual work, but also did a lot of manual work.

Several important agreements were made here. In 1567 stadtholder Aremberg stayed there for some time, while in 1578 the Frisian bishop Curenis Petri was temporarily imprisoned there. In 1580 it passed into ownership to the province and they announced that anyone could demolish the monastery. Later, in a resolution of 6 November 1581, it was decided, among other things, to burn down this monastery, "so that the enemies (Spaniards) do not make robber's nests out of it". The buildings with the historic names Martinushof and Kleasterhof at Kloosterlaan 8 and 10 are still reminders of this.
