Each region in Friesland has its own unique products, all stemming from the fertile and diverse Frisian soil. These three types of soil form the foundation for a sustainable future, where healthy food and care for nature go hand in hand.

  • Clay

    Along the Wadden Coast, salty water seeps into the clay soils. This creates unique products, such as potatoes and herbs that add a salty flavor to Frisian cuisine. They grow against the wind, nourished by the rich clay—stubborn, resilient, and deliciously authentic.

  • Peat

    The peatlands, where the soft, marshy ground gently undulates beneath your feet, were once dug up to fuel stoves during harsh winters. Today, we speak of the peat meadow area—a mix of forest, nature reserves, and a wealth of birds and cranberries.

  • Sand

    In the south of Friesland, the soil is lighter and drier—ideal for growing asparagus and berries. Here, ancient trees have provided shade for people, animals, and crops for centuries. A humble growing ground that yields a wealth of products.
