Ready to head out?

Even if you depend on a wheelchair, mobility scooter or walker, there is still plenty to discover in Northeast Friesland. Step into the stories of the Wadden coast at Museum ’t Fiskershúske, wander through the gardens of De Kruidhof, or dive into stars, science and local history at Observeum.

Prefer to be out on the water? With Rondvaartbedrijf Lauwersmeer,, you can see the region from a different side, with wide views, fresh air and the calm of the Lauwersmeer all around you.

We have gathered a few accessible outings here to help you on your way.

Where will you go first?

Out for fresh air - without barriers

Fresh air, wide views and a good route ahead, that sounds like a day well spent. In and around Northeast Friesland, follow a route through Dokkum, head into De Alde Feanen, or enjoy the wide-open feeling around the Lauwersmeer area. Several nature areas managed by It Fryske Gea offer facilities that make it easier to go out without barriers.

Some routes are especially suitable for wheelchair users, while others are nice for visitors looking for an easier walk, a calm outing or a comfortable route with a stroller. Take a look below and pick the route that suits your pace.

Zonnebloem wheelchair bike

Some routes and nature areas are easier to enjoy with a little extra support. In Friesland, De Zonnebloem offers both a duo bike and a wheelchair bike, so people can go out together, including visitors who stay in their own wheelchair. The bike costs €5 per booking and can be reserved through care locations in Burgum, Dokkum, Leeuwarden and De Westereen.
