Zwaluwhaven Ald Dwinger (memorial)

Warten

A memorial to the crashed Lancaster R5682 in Nationaal Park De Alde Feanen.

Take a look

A memorial, a “swallow harbour”, as wide as the aircraft’s wingspan, on the crash site near landfill Ald Dwinger. There are 251 nest holes, representing the number of planes that took off on the night of 4–5 September 1942. Twelve of the holes are filled with an aluminium tube made from the aircraft: one for each plane that did not return.

The swallow stands for “new life”. There is also a swallow made from the wreckage of the plane, the scrap that flew so many kilometres for our freedom.
