In Alde Leie, you’ll find De Elfstedenschaatsster, a tribute to the female winners of the Eleven Cities Tour.
The idea for this sculpture came from Douwe Sinnema, a resident of Alde Leie. No artist was involved in its creation; instead, the logo of local skating club IJsclub De Eendracht was simply enlarged. The design was then cut from a thick steel plate by four employees of forklift manufacturer Kooi in Vrouwenparochie. Just two weeks after the idea was conceived, the sculpture was ready.
The three female winners were present at the unveiling on 28 December 1997, performed by Henk Kroes, chairman of the Royal Association De Friesche Elf Steden.
