Public transport in Friesland
Heading out by bus, train or ferry? A little planning in advance can make your visit a lot easier. On this page, you’ll find the main public transport options in and around Northeast Friesland, plus a few extra tips if you travel with limited mobility, use a wheelchair or walker, or simply like to know what to expect before you leave.
Train Services
The train is a handy way to travel into the region. In the Frisian Woods, the railway line runs from Leeuwarden to Groningen, with stops in Buitenpost, De Westereen, Feanwâlden and Hurdegaryp. If you like to know what to expect before you leave, it helps to check which station is closest to your destination and how easy the route is from there. That can be especially useful if you use a wheelchair, mobility scooter or walker, or if you simply prefer a clear and easy journey.
For current travel information, visit NS, and for carrier-specific accessibility information you can also check Arriva’s page on travelling with a disability.
Bus Services
From Surhuisterveen, Burgum and Dokkum, various buses continue into the region. If you are travelling by bus, it is worth checking in advance which stop is closest to where you want to go, and what the route looks like once you get off. A short walk can feel very different depending on the surface, distance or amount of clear signage. The 9292 accessible travel planner is a handy place to start, because it takes the accessibility of stops, stations and vehicles into account. 9292 can be especially useful if you travel with a wheelchair or are visually impaired.

Ferries to the Islands
Fancy heading to the islands? The ferry to Ameland departs from Holwerd, and from Lauwersoog you can sail to Schiermonnikoog. If accessibility matters in your planning, it is worth checking a few practical details before you leave. The ferry to Ameland has a lift and adapted toilets, while the ferries to Schiermonnikoog have a chair lift. A wheelchair can also be borrowed in the terminal, and guide dogs or assistance dogs may travel free of charge. Do keep in mind that the fast ferry to Ameland is currently not accessible for wheelchairs or walkers, and that space on the fast service to Schiermonnikoog can be limited.
