If you enjoy cycling next to water and through woodland, this route is perfect. As you cycle out of Leeuwarden along the banks of the Dokkumer Ee canal, just outside the city you come to the wonderful little village of Snakkerburen. From here, an old church path leads you across meadows to the picturesque village of Wyns,

where you can relax on a waterfront terrace and enjoy watching the boats and the coming and going of the ferry. The route continues eastwards, past the famous bridge with portraits of skaters depicted in blue and white tiles, built as a monument to the Elfstedentocht tour skating event.

As you cycle through the varied natural and cultural landscape of the It Bûtenfjild nature reserve, it is worth stopping in the village of Mûnein to admire the geological monument made with glacial erratics deposited during the Ice Age.

And do be sure to stop in the village of Feanwâlden to see the Schierstins tower built in the 13th century. The visitor centre is definitely worth a visit.

From the woods, you cycle back to the capital of Friesland through the beautiful Groene Ster recreational area, which makes a wonderful end to the route!
