Friesland is full of places where you can completely unwind during your holiday. We have a number of tips for relaxing days out. If you’re up for something more exciting, please see the ‘Activities‘ page for more ideas.

Relaxation in Friesland

Different types of grass take centre stage at Jakobstuin (Jacob’s garden) in Jistrum. You will notice the natural grass plantations are combined with prairie-style areas of grass. This garden has no hedgerows or garden buildings, and is in an open-plan design with running borders. Visit also Greencenter ‘t Fryske Wâld.

The Ambachtelijke katoendrukkerij Kleine-Lijn (traditional cotton printers) in Blije is one of the few remaining cotton printers in the Netherlands. In this interesting workshop, fabrics are still printed by hand following traditional methods. Come along and try it yourself at one of our informal workshops – ‘screen-printing on fabric’.

A day of relaxation, soaking in a bath, resting and generally pampering your body.  Fans of a sauna bath should visit Thermen en Beauty Leeuwerikhoeve in Burgum.

The Wadden coastal region can guarantee a portfolio of magnificent photographs. So don’t forget to bring your camera. The information points can introduce you to a variety of mudflat photographers who can advise you on the best way to photograph the region. They may even have room for you in one of their workshops.

Everybody needs the occasional day of retail therapy. Browsing around the shops, taking your time to choose a new outfit, enjoying the occasional cup of coffee. Perhaps enjoy an ice cream at the end of the afternoon. There are plenty of great shops in Kollum, Surhuisterveen, Burgum and even more in Dokkum, Drachten of Leeuwarden.

It may be the most normal sight in the world in Asian countries, but a Tuk-Tuk, a covered three-wheeler, can draw quite a few looks in the north of the Netherlands. Would you like a trip around the Lauwersmeer? A quick visit to Dokkum and Kollum? Maybe you want to pop into Groningen while you’re at it? Rent a Tuk-Tuk or Duck Duck (Citroën 2CV) at Tuk Tuk Lauwersoog and explore your surroundings in the most original way possible.

Looking for some entertainment? Pay a visit to one of the small theatres in the region. The Barontheater in Opende (Groningen) and De Pleats in Burgum offer a varied programme during the winter months.

A real cinematic experience in a place where you would least expect it. Enjoy quality films brought to the screen at MFC Burdaard from one the large cinema chains and for a reasonable price. Bios Burdaard screens a different film every month. A family programme is scheduled during the school holidays. Take a visit to the Filmkafé in Burgum for more films. The Filmhuis Kollum screens a new film every other week.

The world of Buddhism can be found in miniature at the Buddhist Stoepa in Hantum. Large numbers of Buddhist lamas have visited this tranquil location and you are also more than welcome. On arrival, walk around the Stoepa and set the prayer wheels in motion. This will send ‘friendly wishes to all our friends’ across the world.

Scherjon’s klompenmakerij (clog makers) are still producing clogs on a daily basis. Although this was completely normal in the past, nowadays it’s quite unique. Would you like to know more about the history of clogs or would like to try your hand at clog making? Then pay a visit to Noardburgum.

Watching the sunset across the mudflats is an experience not to be missed. Some of the best vantage points include St.-Jacobiparochie, Holwerd, or Wierum. Tip: after sunset, wait a little longer until it is night. No other place on earth is so dark, and the stars so bright, as here.
