Beautiful places to fish in Friesland
Each year, an estimated 100,000 people from both inside and outside the country come to Friesland to cast a fishing line. It’s not surprising, of course; Friesland is a water-rich province with many different fish species, such as pike, carp, and sea trout. For hobby anglers, there are plenty of great fishing spots to enjoy. Whether you’re visiting a pingo or fishing along a quay, you’ll find the best spots here! Here’s a selection of places where you can fish in Friesland:
-
Falomsterfeart
If you’re looking for a spot where you can enjoy the beauty of nature, the Falomsterfeart by the De Houtwiel nature reserve is your ultimate fishing spot. You can enjoy the sound of birds, and otherwise, it’s very peaceful. During peak season, boats may pass by, but you won’t be too disturbed by them.
-
De Zwemmer
De Zwemmer near De Westereen and Kuikhorne is a popular spot for anglers. Here, you mainly catch coarse fish, pike, and zander. A few years ago, no fewer than 22 fishing piers were installed along the Zwemmer, so there’s always a place to cast your line.
-
National Park Lauwersmeer
The Lauwersmeer National Park offers recreational anglers a fantastic fishing experience. Here, you’ll mainly find bream and roach, but pike-perch, perch, and ide are also regularly caught. The best time to fish for bream is from August to mid-October. There are several fishing spots along the shore, and fly fishing is also possible. Coming by boat? Good fishing spots can be found in the Oude Robbegat and Vlinderbalg, near Oostmahorn and Lauwersoog.
-
Fishing together in special spots
Are you looking for a fishing experience for groups (including beginners)? You can, for example, go sea fishing on the Wadden Sea (sea legs required!), or join an eel fisher in the evening to lift the traps in De Alde Feanen National Park.
-
Lively at the Stroobosser Trekvaart
Although a somewhat busy road runs along the Stroobosser Trekvaart (also known as the Dokkumer Trekvaart), it’s still a popular fishing spot. Especially near the village of Westergeest, you can fish very well. Fishing competitions are also sometimes held along this canal.
-
Fishing across 65 kilometers
At the Prinses Margriet Canal, which is 65 kilometers long and runs from Stroobos to Lemmer, passing through several lakes including the Burgumer Mar. Carp, coarse fish, and predator anglers can have a field day here. The Prinses Margriet Canal is easily accessible by car.
-
Pingo! Trout fishing
Trout fishing in the Forelpoel in Kollumerzwaag or the Forelvijver de Pingo in Twijzelerheide offers a very different experience. Pingos were formed during the Ice Age and are still beautiful natural spots in the Noardlike Fryske Wâlden region.
“ For all the mentioned public fishing spots, fishing is only allowed if the applicable rules are followed and you have a valid fishing license (Vispas). ”
