Wheelchair-friendly accommodations, restaurants and outings

Whereas people without a wheelchair don't have to think about things like “Can I go to the toilet in that restaurant?” or “Will I be able to cross that threshold?”, people in wheelchairs often have slightly more challenges when making a trip and booking an adapted hotel room or bed & breakfast. In Friesland, there are restaurants and accommodations that are great to go to. We list a few for you:

Suitable trips for wheelchair users

  • Museum It Fiskershúske in Moddergat is a wheelchair-accessible museum. The five old fishermen's cottages can all be visited by visitors in wheelchairs. It is less easy for larger, electric wheelchairs to maneuver through the museum, but if you call the museum in advance, you may well find that a great deal is still possible. A loaner wheelchair is also available at this museum. Parking is right at the door.
  • At Botanical Garden De Kruidhof in Buitenpost is a wheelchair route with extra-wide paths. Next to the renovated entrance is a disabled parking lot. This year renovations are underway and therefore it is unfortunately not possible to enter the store with a wheelchair this season. Next to the entrance to the store is a bell by which store employees can be alerted to your presence. They will then assist you further. If desired: De Kruidhof also has a loaner wheelchair and two rollators available. It is wise to reserve these (free of charge).
  • De Schierstins in Feanwâlden is suitable for wheelchair users: almost no thresholds on the first floor (except Theun de Vrieskeamer), wheelchair-friendly toilet, stairlift to 1st floor and the doors are wide enough.
  • The wheelchair trail in National Park the Alde Feanen near Earnewâld is recommended for nature lovers. The bird hide is easily accessible. The Visitor Center is also wheelchair-friendly.
  • Exercise is good for you! That is why Friesland Beweegt has created pedestrian routes for safe cycling for the older and less able-bodied target group. They are laps of about 12-27 km, beautiful, green, on reasonably spacious paths, with few obstacles and relatively safe crossings. You can find them here: Doortrappen.frl - Friesland Beweegt.
  • The Forelpoel in Kollumerzwaag has a disabled jetty especially for people in wheelchairs. At De Forelpoel you can fish for trout yourself, which you can then take home. There is also a disabled toilet at De Forelpoel.
  • The bird-watching hut at the Wielewaal in Noardburgum is wheelchair accessible.

Dining out with wheelchair users

  • The TuinCafé in Buitenpost is part of De Kruidhof. A disabled toilet is available here. Here they cook with fresh, organic and local produce.
  • The Pannekoektrein in Marrum is a treat to visit and is also wheelchair accessible.
  • Restaurant De Pleats in Burgum is almost entirely on the ground floor. Mobile ramps are available at thresholds so that wheelchair users can easily pass through the halls.
  • Om de Dobben in Burgum is a restaurant, as well as an animal enclosure and playground for children.
  • Another suitable location to eat is Eetcafé de Meerpaal at Camping it Wiid in Earnewâld.
  • The barrier-free restaurant het Booze Wijf near Lauwersoog has a toilet for wheelchair users. From this restaurant you can also do a wheelchair route through the Lauwersmeer National Park. Highly recommended!

Vacationing with a wheelchair in Friesland

  • Camping De 4 Elementen in Stroobos has wheelchair-friendly pitches. Wheelchair-friendly toilets are available in the heated toilet building.
  • Camping It Wiid in Earnewâld has an eight-person bungalow with a bedroom on the first floor. The campsite also has disabled sanitary facilities.
  • The Prikkebosk in Damwâld is an accommodation in an old farmhouse where one room is suitable for wheelchair users. The bathroom is also equipped for use by the disabled. At De Prikkebosk there are also possibilities for home care. Read more about accessibility for wheelchair users here.
  • The Bûthús of Lytshuis Zilver in Peasens can accommodate four people, including one wheelchair user. The room has a large separate toilet, a private bathroom with a height-adjustable sink, a wide access to the shower of 1.20 meters and a bathtub.
  • At Uniazathe in Ee is a spacious wheelchair-friendly apartment for four to six people on the first floor.
  • Recreation company de Blikvaart in Sint Annaparochie. The first floor of the group accommodation is adapted for the disabled. Including a very spacious bathroom with adjustments to the shower and toilet.
