Boniface

Bonifatius is de man die Dokkum beroemd maakte. Hij werd op 5 juni 754 nabij Dokkum vermoord en meteen heilig verklaard. Hoe triest het leven voor de missionaris ook afliep, de stad hield er een schat aan verhalen en een prachtige bron met kapel als bedevaartsoord aan over. Leer Bonifatius kennen en ontdek meer over zijn leven aan de hand van een permanente tentoonstelling in Museum Dokkum en een prachtige wandelroute door Dokkum langs tien verschillende kunstobjecten. De route leidt je langs de bron, de kapel en de kerk, maar ook langs bijzondere stukken binnenstad. Via Museum Dokkum kun je de wandeling boeken. Je start bij de Bonifatiuskapel. Tip: proef onderweg ook het Bonifatiusbier, gebrouwen met water uit de Bonifatiusbron. Verkrijgbaar op verschillende locaties in de stad.

Bonifatius chapel

On the Bronlaan, outside the center of Dokkum, is the Roman Catholic pilgrimage chapel, also called Bonifatiuskapel. The chapel is a (semi-) open-air building and is used for celebrations, but also for cultural activities and can be rented for weddings, among other things. A real must-see highlight in Dokkum. Every year between 25,000 and 40,000 pilgrims come to the town to visit the chapel. The chapel is open daily from June 1 to Sept 15 from 14.00-17.00h. Entrance is free. Tours and appointments outside opening hours are also possible.

In front of the chapel is the Boniface spring, the natural form of drinking water supply. Did you know that this is still the only authentic place that works as it did in the time of Boniface?

Around the chapel is a little park. There are 14 Stations of the Cross displayed here. 

Boniface Klooster trail

A beautiful pilgrimage route leading from the mud flats to beyond the Frisian forest. The hiking trail connects monasticism with diverse nature and is popular as a reflection route.

Boniface beer

Dokkum used to be bursting with beer breweries, some of which are now back in operation. Fun to visit and of course to taste! Among others, visit Stadsbrouwerij Bonifatius754 on the Diepswal in the center. Nice to know: Bonifatius beer is brewed with water from the Bonifatius spring.
