City Brewery Bonifatius Dokkum

If you are in Dokkum, you absolutely must visit the Bonifatius City Brewery. Located in the heart of this beautiful city, this brewery is run entirely by enthusiastic volunteers from the Dockumer Beer Guild Foundation. They share their passion for beer and the rich beer history of Dokkum with visitors.

History of the beer

The history of Dokkumer beer begins in the early Middle Ages. After the death of Boniface in 754, the monks of the newly founded Boniface Abbey on the Market Square began brewing the first Dokkumer beer. This craft was later taken over by private brewers, and at its peak there were as many as 19 breweries operating in Dokkum.

The water for this beer was drawn from the Bonifatius Spring, known for its purity and clarity. It wasn't until 1876 that the last brewery in Dokkum closed its doors. But after 140 years, Bonifatius beer is back in the center of Dokkum, continuing and reviving the centuries-old tradition.

Experience the brewery and the micro-museum

Craft beers are brewed in the brewery's basement, which you can taste directly in the cozy tasting room. It is also possible to enjoy a snack in the tasting room, provided by the neighbors of Stadscafé-Restaurant Artisante.

Thanks to Museum Dokkum, the brewery also has historic brewing attributes on display in a micro-museum. This makes your visit not only tasty, but also educational.

Het Keerpunt: Bonifatius white beer

The brewery recently launched the Bonifatius Weizen, proudly named “Keerpunt''. This beer is a tribute to Dokkum's skating history. The label tells the story, “After a tough and windy journey through the ‘hell of the north,’ the skaters arrive in Dokkum, the last stamping post before the finish in Leeuwarden. The turning point in Dokkum is one of the most remarkable points of the Eleven Cities Tour. The benches on the banks of the Klein Diep symbolize the turn that skaters must make here.

In addition to the Weizen, the brewery offers a variety of beers, each with its own character and story. From a robust dark double to a fresh blonde variety - there is something for every beer lover to discover.
