Salty sweet adventures in the Lauwersmeer
When I was 8, we regularly visited the Lauwersmeer. More shrub than tree, is my memory. Of course, I had no idea of the area's history: the closure of the Lauwerszee, prompted by the flood disaster in Zeeland, which caused the area to decline somewhat. A price for safety, it was thought.
A campground began, where I made my first surfing meters. Our dogs learned to swim there. Then I wandered for hours through the “military” area. Adventure; that is what the Lauwersmeer area stood and stands for.
New world
The park soon lay extinct, the water became brackish and then fresh. And without much human intervention, a new world emerged in the Lauwersmeer. And what a world it is; today it is one of the most beautiful natural areas in the Netherlands, a National Park and Dark Sky Park.
Now I wander through orchid fields, have good conversations - at an appropriate distance - with Konik horses and Highlanders, visit the numerous bird concerts and experience my own “starry night” in the evenings. To make another attempt on the surfboard the next day and get into the vibrant vacation spirit.
Expedition at the end of the world
Immerse yourself with binoculars and spectacle; that's what makes an expedition. And that is exactly what you can do here in every way. On safari with a 4x4, cycling around the lake or on an adventure in one of the areas around the lake. And every time I come home, it's like coming from another world!
I'm going to Lake Lauwersmeer and taking:
- Binoculars. You don't have to be a professional to bird watch. Besides, you get everything closer, which is wonderful!
- Waterproof shoes or boots. That gives you freedom to walk through swampy areas.
- If you like to know what bird or plant you are looking at, find a good app and install it before you leave.
- Going stargazing? Bring a star map and a nice blanket. Lovely when you settle down on the sky platform or one of the benches.
- A backpack with a thermos and goodies for the road! Great for culinary enjoyment somewhere, especially if it contains tasty local produce.
