The Grote Kerk in Dokkum
The St. Martinus Church, also known as the Grote Kerk, is dedicated to Saint Martin. We mainly know him because of the lantern processions on November 11th, his feast day. The name of the church refers to Martin of Tours, the saint famous for giving half of his cloak to a beggar. The church is located on the Market Square in Dokkum and dates back to the fifteenth century. The current St. Martinus Church is not the first church to stand on this site. At least three wooden churches preceded the current stone church. Also, visit the quiet garden on the side of the church.
During the summer months, there are organ concerts in the St. Martinus Church. These are walk-in concerts, free of charge, and they last about 40 minutes. You can find the Grote Kerk in Dokkum at Markt 2.
Bonifatius church in Dokkum
Commissioned in 1872, the Roman Catholic church was designed by renowned master builder P.J.H. Cuypers. For Dokkum, he built a cross basilica, in early Gothic style, with stone cross vaults over choir and side aisles and wooden barrel vaults over nave and transept. This church was dedicated to St. Martin and St. Boniface and companions. Relics of Boniface are on display in the church: a skull fragment and a petrified bread. The church is in the middle of the shopping area, just steps from St. Martin's Church at Koningstraat 25.
